Tomorrow’s Gone
מחר כבר עבר | Boaz Goldberg | Israel, 2019 | Hebrew/English (English subtitles) | Documentary | 69m | IMDB | Distributor/Sales: Eyal Datz | Festival marketing sample: Docaviv 2019 | Trailer
Description: Boaz Goldberg, a musician and a music journalist profiles his former friend, indie rock musician Gabi Abudraham. Coming from the periphery town of Bet She’an, Abudraham reinvents himself as ‘Charlie Megira’ and makes his mark on the indie rock scene in Tel Aviv. Goldberg is struck by Abudraham’s bravery. Despite his small voice he appears to re-imagine rock-and-roll with an intimate, out-of-time touch. After a period of collaboration, the two fall out. Abudraham emigrates to America where, despite the admiration of some industry lights like Julian Casablancas and Max Richter, his career fails to take off. After a brief stint as a short-order cook in Berlin he ends his life.
Merits: A melancholy tone pervades this touching portrayal of a uniquely brilliant but unlucky musician. Goldberg regrets the death of his friend but also the loss of their friendship. There are interesting clips and stills from the indie rock scene of Tel Aviv in the early aughts.
Rating: Reference to suicide.
