The Three Yossi

שלושה יוסי | Yael Kipper/Ronen Zaretzky | Israel, 2020 | Hebrew (English subtitles) | Documentary | 85m | DCP | IMDB | Distributor/Sales: Yael Kipper | Festival marketing sample: DocAviv 2020 | Trailer | DocuShuk

Description: Back in 1998, Yael Kipper made The Two Yossi, a documentary about a group of homeless squatters in Jaffa with Einat Fishbein. Returning twenty years on, this time with Ronen Zaretzky, they revisit some of the families in the original documentaries and see what has happened to the adults and their now grown up children.

Merits: These who have seen the original film will no doubt be pleased to see the central character, Yossi, now older but as endearing as twenty years ago. The cycle of deprivation has predictably repeated itself in most cases. The notable exception is Yossi’s youngest son. Despite being largely abandoned at the age of 15 he has managed to achieve his dreams and become a fireman like his father. More telling about Israeli is the transformation undergone by the building. The wreck frequently set alight by the protesting squatters has been transformed into a luxury condominium building.

Rating: Strong language.
