When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl | Caroline Link | Germany/Switzerland, 2019 | German/Swiss German/French/English (English subtitles) | Drama | 119m | DCP | IMDB | Distributor/Sales: Beta Films/NA: Greenwich Entertainment | Trailer

Description: On the eve of the 1933 elections, Arthur Kemper, a liberal Jewish journalist, leaves Berlin for Switzerland. Nine year old Anna, her brother and mother, join him in Zurich soon afterwards. Anna’s toy pink rabbit is unfortunately left behind. Their adventures will take them on to a Swiss village, on to Paris and finally London. Based on the semi autobiographical novel by Judith Kerr.

Merits: The impact of the rise of the Nazis on a Jewish family is given a child’s eye view. Fortunately, the family manages to escape persecutions but are not spared the privations of refugee life on the run. The film features exceptional performances, particularly by Riva Krymalowski as Anna.

Rating: Suitable for all audiences.
